Requirements to access this integration program:

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is specifically for individuals who wish to become permanent residents of Canada and who meet the requirements for qualified occupational skills in demand in Canada.

To be eligible to apply, a person must have:

At least 2 years of full-time work experience in the last five years in an eligible occupation. This experience must have been obtained legally either with a work permit or in your country of origin

Meet the minimum language levels (English or French)

Have a full-time job offer in Canada for a total of at least one year

Or have a certificate of qualification in specialized occupation issued by a province or territory of Canada.

The requirements to have a job offer or to obtain a certification in the occupation, make it very difficult for people who are in their countries and who need a visitor visa, to come to Canada to be able to apply for this category.

Because it is always easier to get a job offer if the person can speak to the employer in person or if they have contacts to help them.

Also, obtaining the certification or license to develop the occupation becomes problematic for people who are in their countries because the exam to obtain the license can only be done in Canada and by the rules of the body that regulates the occupation in the province in which the person plans to reside.

Therefore, it is a program that benefits people who come from countries whose citizens do not require a visa to come to look for work or take their exam.

If you qualify, the Federal Skilled Trades Program is also a very good program for people who are in Canada as visitors or who are studying or have a work permit. This, because being in Canada will allow them to improve their language skills, make contacts to find a job, or prepare and take the certification exam.

How does this immigration program work?

In contrast to the Skilled worker’s program, you do not have to reach a score for the category, to qualify it is enough that you meet the aforementioned requirements. This seems confusing since if they must have the score to be invited to do the procedure, but the score is not for the immigrant category but the processing system.

The processing system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), more easily recognized as Express Entry, is a system in which candidates are awarded points based on the following factors: skill, work experience, command of the language, job offer supported by a Labor Market Impact Assessment, the nomination of the candidate by the provincial government, employability, and the language and education of the applicant’s spouse or domestic partner.
