The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada reported through its website that the pilot program for Home Support Worker is still open, so the ministry is still accepting applications.

The Process

Foreigners who have received a job offer as caregivers in Canada can apply through these two programs, except in Quebec.

The process will be different for each applicant, depending on her situation and her qualified work experience. It is important to note that experiences as foster parents or as domestic employees are not included.

Those who already have at least 24 months of qualified experience must provide full proof of that experience. If they meet the eligibility criteria, they may not need the 24-month period to apply.

When applying, candidates will make an application for a work permit at the same time as the application for permanent residence.

In the event that they meet all the required requirements, they will receive a temporary work permit linked only to that occupation. This will allow you to work as caregivers for any employee, as long as the employee is not on the government blacklist.

Once candidates have 24 months of experience, they can submit proof of that experience and Canada will make a final decision regarding their case.

To consider

Home Support Workers obtain a work permit that works for any employer – it is not fixed with one – but only for that occupation.

Applicants will not be able to request an extension of the work permit unless their permit has been granted for a duration of less than 36 months due to the expiration of the passport or because they have a new passport.

You will have to pass two medical exams, one prior to receiving the work permit and another when you already have the required experience. Family members should also have medical examinations.

Applicants will be able to accumulate their work experience with different employers, but not if the occupations are different. For example, if you worked full-time as a childcare provider for two different employers, you can accumulate this experience, but if you worked full-time as a childcare provider for one employer and as home support for another, you cannot combine this experience.

If you worked in the province of Quebec in this occupation, your experience will be taken into account, but if you apply with less than 24 months of experience, you should consider living outside this province in order to accumulate the required time.

In the event that the application goal is reached, you must wait until next year to submit your application.
